Horned Dorset Inn Website Redesign & Ongoing Support

A client referred the Horned Dorset Inn to eKamria after the Inn’s previous hosting and maintenance provider felt “too corporate”. The Inn wanted a more personalized relationship and responsive support, so they chose to move their website hosting, maintenance, and ongoing support to eKamria.

During our discussions, we recommended transitioning the website from WordPress to Joomla! for greater flexibility and easier content management.

Supporting a Key Initiative: Glimmerglass Music Festival

One of the Horned Dorset Inn’s most important annual projects is providing prepared meals for attendees of the Glimmerglass Music Festival. We developed a custom online ordering process that:

• Displays a calendar of performances with links to order meals for the correct date
• Automatically disables ordering after the cutoff date to prevent errors
• Generates order summaries to streamline meal preparation
• Produces pick lists for labeling and organizing meals for delivery at the event

This process significantly reduced ordering mistakes and improved efficiency for both customers and staff.

Simplifying Ongoing Updates

We also built tools to make it easier for the Inn to manage its website content:

• A system for weekly “at-home” meal delivery menus that staff can update without technical help
• An event management system for special dinner events that boosts visibility by automatically displaying event summaries in multiple key areas of the site, while also removing past events to keep the content fresh and up-to-date.

A mutual friend referred Jack Balinsky to eKamria. As a historian of Catholic Charities, Jack had published an extensive collection of documents on an old Joomla website. When he discovered the site was no longer online and couldn’t reach the previous webmaster, he feared his work had been lost.

Fortunately, I was able to recover a copy of the site using the Wayback Machine Internet Archive. The original site hadn’t been updated in years and was no longer compatible with current web technology. I also managed to contact the former webmaster, who generously helped retrieve additional content that wasn’t archived.

We created a new website for Jack, including updated information about him and his awards. Today, we continue to host and actively maintain this valuable historical archive.

Since then, the project has evolved. He’s expanded the site to include rental listings for both office spaces and apartments, making the platform a more comprehensive resource for prospective renters.

A musician—my brother, actually—referred Greg Spencer, founder of the nationally distributed independent record label Blue Wave Records. Greg’s original website, built in 2001, was in need of a refresh—it lacked images of the bands and musicians he represented, as well as the album covers for the music he was promoting. Even ordering an album required printing out a form, marking it up, and mailing it in.

Greg didn’t want or need a full-featured online store, but we implemented a simple, user-friendly solution that allows visitors to purchase albums one at a time through PayPal.

He also hosts an annual Blues concert series spotlighting and honoring artists on his label. The new site includes a dedicated section for this event series.

Overall, the redesigned site is more engaging, colorful, and functional—bringing his label’s legacy and music to life online.

Magnolia Ariza-Nieto, Ph.D., Founder and CEO of epiWELL, LLC was referred to us through the SBDC Coronavirus Small Business Financial Assistance Program. Dr. Ariza-Nieto, a coach for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) was developing a website for her PreventT2 program using a DIY platform but was running into problems. After our initial consultation, Dr. Ariza-Nieto decided to hire eKamria to develop her site using Joomla.

The original plan was to create a basic site, using the materials available to her from the CDC. However, Dr. Ariza-Nieto is a Molecular Biologist and Geneticist and performs scientific research. She decided she would like the website to reflect this work also, for when she might apply for research grants, and be positioned to expand the website in either discipline.

Amy Doyle, Owner of White Stone Wellness, had eKamria on her radar for her website since 2017, when we had our first meeting to discuss her needs. Many times over the years, she indicated she still planned to work with us, even though she had a WordPress website, and later, a Kajabi site.

In 2022, she decided it was time, and we developed a Joomla website for her. All content from her Kajabi site was moved over and reconfigured. 

Soon after the website was complete, she talked with us about her desire to implement an email marketing program and the need for landing pages. Joomla is capable of providing both an integrated email system and custom landing pages without the need to integrate and purchase additional third-party software. This is also helpful because it keeps the content on her site and generates more traffic to her site -- something that Google likes.

Yes, Michael is my brother! He decided to go for his dream of being a full-time musician in Austin, TX in 2021. I offered to help get him off the ground while I used his site to learn some new tools and techniques. His was the first Joomla4 site I developed and there are a number of plugins that were "firsts" on this site.

The initial purpose of the site was to keep his performance dates available. He also wanted to keep past performances on the site. The process developed makes it very easy to add new dates and switch them "off" the upcoming page and onto the "past" page.  The next five upcoming performances automatically publish on the home page.

Another feature added is a searchable list of music he can play at events. It can be searched and sorted by artist, song title, or genre.

Recently, an integrated email marketing plugin was added. This was also a "first".  A custom email template was added that is extremely easy to send out an email of upcoming dates. Because it's integrated right into the Joomla website, the template just needs to be selected and it automatically populates with the current upcoming dates and locations. These emails can be created and sent in minutes.

Susan Cerulean is a writer living in Florida. She originally contacted me in 2018 to help her establish an email list she could use to begin promoting her upcoming book I have been Assigned The Single Bird (I recommend you read it -- I really enjoyed it). She had a large list of names, so my role was importing them into Mailchimp, configuring the mail delivery settings, and creating a template for her.

She then asked me if I could assist in updating her WordPress website. The original developer was no longer available. Along with content updates, I also performed technical updates on the site.

Susan contacted me again when she was getting ready to launch her book, She wanted to update more content and add book reading and book signing events to the site.
